Washington Board of Naturopaths Deliberate Adding Vasectomies, Abortions to Scope

On August 12, the Washington State Board of Naturopathic Physicians met to consider adding vasectomies to the scope of practice of naturopathic physicians (NDs). The AUA and Washington State Urological Society (WSUS) co-signed and submitted a letter in opposition to this scope expansion – explaining the reasons why vasectomies are not “minor in-office procedures.” The Washington State Board of Naturopathic Physicians is going to review the AUA/WSUS request with its attorney general and present findings during its November meeting. In the meantime, the Board is moving forward with a request to the FDA to include licensed NDs as authorized prescribers of mifepristone.

During the meeting, Angela Ross, ND, Executive Director of the Washington Association of Naturopathic Physicians, stated they are also working in California and Oregon to promote similar efforts. WSUS Legislative Chair Jeffrey Frankel, MD, and AUA staff attended the online meeting.
